Sony Pictures needed a new office building to replace aging temporary facilities on their Culver City studio production lot. The new four story building faces one of the main entrances to the lot and becomes an important face to the city.

The building houses three floors of open office space, each with the infrastructure needed for operations of independent arms of the Sony corporate structure, as well as a large ground-floor mailroom and distribution center serving the entire film studio with loading dock and easy vehicular access. The building entrance and approach are designed to accommodate contiguous buildings in the future as part of the Sony Studio Master Plan.

The project had an extremely limited budget which required strategic use of affordable common California construction techniques. The structural system was a hybrid of steel superstructure with wood framing and truss joists. The building envelope was a lively, playful design appropriate to the nature of the film industry and constructed of colored exterior stucco and corrugated metal. Mechanical and sprinkler systems were exposed ducts and pipes that contributed to the industrial nature of the backlot environment.
